About

Rose Arianna McGowan was born on September 5, 1973, in Florence, Tuscany, Italy, to American parents. Her early childhood was spent within the Italian chapter of the Children of God before her family relocated to Eugene, Oregon, USA, in the early 1980s. McGowan faced an untraditional youth, including a period of homelessness and emancipation from her parents by age 15. Her acting career began with notable roles in independent films such as “The Doom Generation” (1995), for which she received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Debut Performance. She gained broader recognition through her role in the commercially successful horror film “Scream” (1996), which grossed over $173 million worldwide.

Throughout the late 1990s, McGowan continued her work in independent cinema, appearing in films like “Going All the Way” (1997) and “Jawbreaker” (1999), where she received an MTV Movie Award nomination for Best Villain. The 2000s marked her rise to prominence in television as Paige Matthews in the popular WB supernatural drama series “Charmed,” a role she held from 2001 to 2006 for 112 episodes. During this period, she also took on diverse film roles, including a cat girl in “Monkeybone” (2001) and portraying Ann-Margret in the CBS miniseries “Elvis” (2005). Her career achieved critical recognition with her starring roles in Robert Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror” (2007) and Quentin Tarantino’s “Death Proof” (2007), segments of the “Grindhouse” double feature, for which she was nominated for a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress.

In the 2010s, McGowan expanded her professional endeavors into directing, with her short film debut “Dawn” (2014) earning a nomination for the Short Film Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. She also ventured into music, releasing her debut single “RM486” in 2015 and her album “Planet 9” in 2018. Beyond her artistic achievements, McGowan has become a prominent activist, particularly known for her outspoken contributions to the MeToo movement and speaking out against sexual assault and harassment, notably with regard to the Harvey Weinstein cases. In 2017, she was recognized by Time magazine as one of the Silence Breakers, their Person of the Year.
