About

Ryan Beard, born in 1988 or 1989 in Bowling Green, Kentucky, commenced his football journey at Bowling Green High School, contributing to two Class 3A championship appearances. He then played college football at Western Kentucky as a defensive back from 2007 to 2011. During his collegiate career, Beard was twice named All-Sun Belt Conference and recognized as an all-academic selection. In 2010, he achieved a career-high of 71 tackles as a junior and received the school’s “Iron Man Award” in his senior year for his 51 stops. He earned two degrees from Western Kentucky: a Bachelor of Science in business management and a Master of Science in recreation and sports administration.

Following his playing career, Beard transitioned into coaching, beginning as a defensive graduate assistant at Western Kentucky from 2012 to 2013. He then moved to Louisville in 2014 as a defensive quality control coach. In 2015, he joined Northern Michigan as an assistant coach for cornerbacks, a role he was promoted from to secondary coach before returning to Western Kentucky as their defensive backs coach in 2016. From 2017 to 2018, he served as an assistant at Louisville again, and in 2019, he coached special teams and safeties at Central Michigan. His career progression led him to Missouri State in 2020 as defensive coordinator and safeties coach, where he significantly impacted the team’s performance.

At Missouri State, Beard’s defensive strategies led to the team setting a single-season sacks record in his first year, helping them reach the playoffs for the first time in three decades. The following year, the defense again broke the single-season sack record, securing a second consecutive playoff appearance. In 2023, Ryan Beard was appointed the head coach of Missouri State University, succeeding Bobby Petrino, whose daughter Katie is married to Beard. He has since continued to develop the program. As of the 2025 season, his overall head coaching record stands at 15–14.
