Sam Altman is a technology entrepreneur and investor recognized for his significant contributions to the artificial intelligence sector, prominently as the CEO of OpenAI. After co-founding Loopt, a mobile social networking service, in 2005, Sam Altman secured over $30 million in venture capital for the company. Loopt was a foundational company within the startup accelerator Y Combinator before being acquired by Green Dot Corporation for $43.4 million in 2012. Altman then joined Y Combinator as a partner in 2011, ascending to president in February 2014.
During his tenure, he significantly expanded YC’s reach, aiming to fund 1,000 companies annually and focusing on ‘hard technology’ startups. He further launched YC Research and YC Continuity to support maturing companies. In March 2019, Altman transitioned to a less operational role as chairman of YC Group to dedicate more time to OpenAI, ultimately leaving all YC affiliations by early 2020. Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a non-profit organization, driven by concerns about AI safety and the existential risks posed by artificial general intelligence (AGI).
The organization received $1 billion in pledges from various investors. He became CEO of OpenAI in March 2019. Under his leadership, OpenAI launched ChatGPT in December 2022, which rapidly gained widespread attention with over a million sign-ups within five days. The rapid success of ChatGPT led Altman to address the United States Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on Privacy, Technology and the Law on AI oversight.
In May 2023, he embarked on a world tour, meeting numerous global leaders to discuss critical AI regulation and collaboration strategies. Altman was briefly removed and subsequently reinstated as OpenAI CEO in 2023, reaffirming his pivotal role at the forefront of artificial intelligence innovation. He continues to lead OpenAI in its mission to develop advanced AI.
