Sam Jamie Bird, born on January 9, 1987, in Roehampton, Greater London, England, commenced his single-seater racing career in Formula BMW in 2004. He quickly advanced, securing a runner-up position in the Formula BMW UK series in 2005 and achieving fourth place in the Formula BMW World Final. His progression continued in 2006 in the British Formula Renault series, where he claimed four race wins and finished fourth overall. In 2007, Bird transitioned to the British Formula 3 Championship with Carlin Motorsport, earning two wins and ten podiums, ultimately finishing fourth in the championship. He later competed in the Formula 3 Euro Series in 2008 and 2009, capturing a pole position, multiple fastest laps, and four podiums.
Bird’s career saw further development in the GP2 Series, beginning with the GP2 Asia Series in 2009–10, where he achieved a second-place finish in the final round. He joined ART Grand Prix for the 2010 GP2 Series, securing his maiden win at Monza and accumulating five podiums, finishing fifth overall. In 2011, he moved to iSport International, concluding the season in sixth place. A pivotal year was 2013 with Russian Time, where he recorded five wins, three fastest laps, and six podiums, culminating in a second-place finish in the championship and contributing to Russian Time’s constructors’ championship title. This period also included a successful stint in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series in 2012, where he won two races and secured seven podiums, ultimately finishing third in the championship.
In 2014, Bird ventured into the FIA World Endurance Championship with AF Corse, achieving a pole position at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the GTE Am class. He then became a prominent figure in Formula E, competing since its inaugural season in 2014–15. Over 11 seasons, he amassed 12 wins, 27 podiums, 6 pole positions, and 12 fastest laps across 141 race starts. Notable achievements include finishing third in the 2017–18 Formula E Championship and winning the LMP2 title in the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship with G-Drive Racing. He also served as a test driver for Mercedes GP in Formula One in 2012.
