Samuel Frederick Smith, born on May 19, 1992, in Bishop’s Stortford, England, UK, embarked on their musical journey at a young age. Their parents encouraged their singing, leading to vocal training and appearances in local theater productions, including Youth Music Theatre UK’s 2007 production of ‘Oh! Carol.’ Prior to focusing on musical theater, Smith also participated in jazz bands. After working with six different managers, Smith moved to London at age 18 to seek broader opportunities in the music industry. Early singles included ‘Bad Day All Week’ (2008) and ‘When It’s Alright’ (2009).
Smith gained significant recognition in 2012 by featuring on Disclosure’s ‘Latch,’ which reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart. This was followed by a feature on Naughty Boy’s ‘La La La’ in 2013, which topped the UK Singles Chart. That same year, Smith released their debut EP, ‘Nirvana.’ In December 2013, they received both the Brit Critics’ Choice Award and the BBC Sound of 2014 poll, indicating early critical acclaim. Their debut studio album, ‘In the Lonely Hour,’ released in 2014 through Capitol Records UK, debuted at number one on the UK Albums Chart and number two on the US Billboard 200. The album’s hit singles, ‘Money on My Mind’ and ‘Stay with Me,’ further cemented their presence in the mainstream, with ‘Stay with Me’ reaching number one in the UK and number two on the US Billboard Hot 100. The accompanying singles, ‘I’m Not the Only One’ and ‘Like I Can’, also achieved top ten positions in the UK.
In 2018, Smith unveiled their sophomore album, ‘The Thrill of It All,’ a record that achieved chart-topping success in both the UK and US. This period also saw significant collaborations, including Calvin Harris’s ‘Promises’ (2018), which became Smith’s seventh number one hit on the UK Singles Chart. The 2019 single ‘Dancing with a Stranger’ with Normani achieved top ten status in both the UK and US. Their third studio album, ‘Love Goes,’ was released in 2020. In 2022, Smith collaborated with Kim Petras on ‘Unholy’, which became their first US number-one single and made them the first openly non-binary artist to top the Billboard Hot 100. This milestone preceded the release of their fourth album, ‘Gloria,’ in 2023. Smith also unveiled their fifth studio album, ‘Hazel Eyes,’ in 2026, inspired by their relationship with fashion designer Christian Cowan.
