About

Sarah McBride was born on August 9, 1990, in Wilmington, Delaware. She graduated from Cab Calloway School of the Arts in 2009 and earned a bachelor’s degree from American University in Washington, D.C., in 2013. During her time at American University, she was elected student body president in 2011. In 2012, McBride gained public attention when she came out as a transgender woman through an op-ed in her university’s student newspaper, ‘The Eagle’. Her coming out was acknowledged by NPR, The Huffington Post, and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation. Notably, former Attorney General of Delaware Beau Biden and then-Vice President Joe Biden expressed support and pride following her announcement. In 2012, McBride also interned at the White House, becoming the first openly transgender woman to work there in any capacity, focusing on LGBTQ+ issues within the White House Office of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs. This experience and her relationship with the Biden family have been cited as influential in shaping President Biden’s views on transgender issues.

McBride’s advocacy efforts expanded significantly in January 2013 when she joined the board of directors of Equality Delaware. She became a leading advocate for legal protections for transgender Delawareans, playing a key role in the lobbying effort for legislation that banned discrimination based on gender identity and expression in employment, housing, insurance, and public accommodations. The legislation passed the state senate and house, and was signed into law by Governor Jack Markell in June 2013. Following this, she worked with the LGBT Progress team at the Center for American Progress. In 2016, McBride delivered a TED Talk titled ‘Gender assigned to us at birth should not dictate who we are’ and was the first openly transgender person to speak at a national party convention when she addressed the Democratic National Convention. Her speech focused on LGBTQ+ rights and honored her late husband, Andrew Cray. She released her memoir, ‘Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality,’ in 2018, which featured a foreword by Joe Biden.

In July 2019, McBride announced her candidacy for the Delaware State Senate, emphasizing healthcare and paid family and medical leave. She won the election in November 2020, becoming the first transgender state senator in U.S. history. As a state senator, she successfully sponsored the Healthy Delaware Families Act, providing paid family and medical leave, and passed legislation on mental health education, green technologies, and Medicaid investment. In June 2023, McBride announced her candidacy for Delaware’s at-large congressional district. She won the Democratic primary in September 2024 and subsequently won the general election in November 2024, becoming the first openly transgender member of the U.S. Congress, officially taking office on January 3, 2025. In Congress, she serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and holds leadership roles in the Congressional Equality Caucus and the Congressional Democratic Women’s Caucus.
