Sarah Mcbride

Sarah McBride is a U.S. Representative known for her work in LGBTQ+ rights advocacy and legislative achievements in healthcare, education, and family leave. After becoming the first openly transgender woman to intern at the White House in 2012, Sarah McBride went on to build a distinguished career as a legislator and advocate for LGBTQ+ human rights. During her time at American University, she was elected student body president in 2011.

The landmark legislation passed both the state senate and house, signed into law by Governor Jack Markell in June 2013. Following this success, she worked with the LGBT Progress team at the Center for American Progress. In 2016, McBride delivered a TED Talk titled ‘Gender assigned to us at birth should not dictate who we are’ and made history as the first openly transgender person to speak at a national party convention when she addressed the Democratic National Convention, delivering a speech focused on LGBTQ+ rights. Her memoir, ‘Tomorrow Will Be Different: Love, Loss, and the Fight for Trans Equality,’ was released in 2018, featuring a foreword by Joe Biden.

Additionally, McBride holds leadership roles within both the Congressional Equality Caucus and the Congressional Democratic Women’s Caucus, continuing her impactful advocacy at a national level.
