Sergio Garcia Fernández was born on January 9, 1980, in Borriol, Castellón, Spain. He began playing golf at the age of three, taught by his father, who was a club professional. Garcia had a notable amateur career, setting a record in 1995 as the youngest player to make a cut at a European Tour event at age 16, a record later broken in 2008. In 1995, he also won the European Amateur and later the Boys Amateur Championship in 1997. He further cemented his amateur success by winning The Amateur Championship in 1998 at Muirfield.
Garcia turned professional in 1999 after being the lowest amateur at the Masters Tournament. His professional debut was marked by a quick ascent, securing his first European Tour title in July 1999 at the Irish Open, his sixth professional start. He followed this with another victory at the Linde German Masters and was awarded the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year. That same year, Garcia gained international recognition with a memorable second-place finish against Tiger Woods at the PGA Championship, losing by one stroke. He also became the youngest player to compete in the Ryder Cup in 1999.
Throughout his career, Garcia has consistently ranked among the top golfers globally, spending over 450 weeks in the Official World Golf Ranking’s top 10, reaching a career-high of second in November 2008. His career highlights include 38 international professional wins, such as The Players Championship in 2008 and his long-awaited major breakthrough at the 2017 Masters Tournament. Known for his strong iron play and accuracy, Garcia has also been a key figure in the Ryder Cup, participating in ten events and becoming the all-time Ryder Cup points leader with 28.5 points.
