Tom Lehman was born on March 7, 1959, in Austin, Minnesota, and raised in Alexandria, Minnesota. He pursued his education at the University of Minnesota, where he played college golf and earned a degree in business/accounting. Lehman turned professional in 1982, embarking on a career that would see him achieve significant milestones in the sport. His early professional years involved playing on various tours, including the PGA Tour from 1983 to 1985, as well as tours in Asia and South Africa. A pivotal period included his time on the second-tier Ben Hogan Tour in the United States, where he honed his skills and prepared for greater success.
Lehman’s career gained substantial momentum in the early 1990s. He secured his PGA Tour card by topping the Ben Hogan Tour’s money list in 1991, allowing him continuous membership on the PGA Tour from 1992 onwards. A career highlight was his victory at The Open Championship in 1996, his only major championship win. That same year, he was recognized as the PGA Tour Player of the Year, a testament to his consistent performance. From 1995 to 1997, Lehman held the 54-hole lead at the U.S. Open three times, demonstrating his competitive presence at major events. In April 1997, he reached the pinnacle of the sport, becoming the World Number 1 golfer for one week. Beyond playing, Lehman has developed an interest in golf course architecture, leading to design projects such as Cragun’s Legacy Courses in Brainerd, Minnesota.
Lehman continued to play professionally, achieving success on the PGA Tour Champions circuit after turning 50. In April 2009, he won his debut Champions Tour event, the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf, alongside Bernhard Langer. He further solidified his senior career by winning the Senior PGA Championship in 2010. In 2011, Lehman led the Champions Tour money list and was named the Champions Tour Player of the Year. Notably, he is the only golfer to have received the Player of the Year honor across all three PGA Tours: the regular PGA Tour, the developmental Korn Ferry Tour, and the PGA Tour Champions. His involvement in team competitions includes serving as the captain for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in 2006, as well as participating as a player in multiple Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups.
