Shreyas Santosh Iyer was born on December 6, 1994, in Mumbai, India. His early cricketing talent was identified by coach Pravin Amre at the Shivaji Park Gymkhana, where his aggressive stroke play earned comparisons to Virender Sehwag. Iyer’s collegiate career at Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics saw him lead his team to six trophies, showcasing early leadership qualities. His foundational skills were further refined during a stint with the Trent Bridge Cricket Team in the UK in 2014, where he averaged 99 runs across three matches, scoring a high of 171.
Iyer’s domestic career began with his List A debut for Mumbai in November 2014, followed by his first-class debut in December 2014 during the Ranji Trophy. He quickly made an impact, scoring 809 runs in his inaugural Ranji season, including two centuries and six fifties. The 2015–16 Ranji Trophy was a breakout year, where he amassed 1,321 runs, a feat that positioned him as the season’s top scorer and only the second player to achieve over 1,300 runs in a single Ranji competition. His consistent scoring, including 725 runs in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy and a career-high 202 not out against Australia in a practice match, cemented his reputation as a formidable batter.
His IPL journey began in 2015 when the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) acquired him for ₹2.6 crore, making him the highest-earning uncapped player. He justified the investment by scoring 439 runs and earning the IPL Emerging Player of the Year award. Iyer took on the captaincy for Delhi Daredevils in April 2018 at just 23 years old, leading them to their first IPL final in 2020. In 2022, he moved to the Kolkata Knight Riders, captaining them to their third IPL title in 2024. Currently, he is set to lead the Punjab Kings, further solidifying his leadership credentials in franchise cricket. On the international stage, Iyer debuted for India in T20Is in November 2017, ODIs in December 2017, and Tests in November 2021, where he notably scored a century on debut against New Zealand, becoming the first Indian to achieve a century and a half-century in his debut Test innings. He was part of the Indian squad that won the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy, and was also a finalist in the 2023 Cricket World Cup. He was twice named ICC Men’s Player of the Month in February 2022 and March 2025.
