Stefan Nicholas Gates was born on September 19, 1967, in London, England. His early years included modeling for knitwear patterns and appearing in commercials and TV dramas such as “Poldark” and “Supernatural.” Notably, he and his sister Samantha were featured as child models on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s 1973 album “Houses of the Holy.” He pursued higher education at Pembroke College, Oxford, where he earned a degree in English. After graduating, Gates spent 16 years working in film and television, taking on various roles including assistant director, scriptwriter, director, and producer, eventually becoming a development producer for BBC Comedy.
His career took a turn due to his interest in unusual foods, which led him to begin writing about them. This passion culminated in his role as a presenter and co-writer for the BBC Two series “Full on Food” in 2004. Gates then developed and presented over 20 TV series, primarily for the BBC, focusing on food and science. Among these are three series of “Cooking in the Danger Zone,” which explored unusual foods in challenging global locations like Afghanistan and Chernobyl, and was broadcast in 25 countries. He also created “Gastronuts” and “Incredible Edibles,” children’s food adventure series for CBBC. His work consistently aims to educate and entertain audiences about what they eat and its scientific context.
Beyond television, Gates has authored 13 books, covering topics from food and science to peculiar subjects. His first children’s book, “Incredible Edibles” (2012), received the Information Book Award in 2013.
