The legendary Steven Gerrard is a professional football manager and former player, who most famously marshalled the midfield for Liverpool between 1998 and 2015. After ending his playing career at LA Galaxy, he moved into management, looking after Glasgow Rangers between 2018 and 2021, before taking the hot seat at Aston Villa. As a player his individual awards include UEFA Club Footballer of the Year 2005, PFA Players’ Player of the Year 2006, and FWA Footballer of the Year 2009. He was made an MBE in 2007, and was inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame in 2021.
Born and raised in Merseyside, Gerrard started playing football for his home team Whiston Juniors where he was quickly noticed by Liverpool scouts. He then joined the Liverpool Academy at the age of nine, and eventually signed a professional contract with the club in 1997 when he was 17. He made his first-team debut in 1998, and went on to be regarded as one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players. He made 504 appearances for the club, clocking up 120 goals. He became club captain in 2003, and went on to help the side win the UEFA Champions League 2004-05, the UEFA Cup 2000-01, the UEFA Super Cup 2001, the FA Cup twice, the League Cup three times, and the FA Community Shield once. In January 2015 he joined LA Galaxy of the MLS, before retiring from the game in November 2016. He also played on the international stage for England, going on to captain the side for four years.
After playing, Gerrard took his coaching badges and following a stint at the Liverpool Academy, where he managed the U19 side, he took the hot seat at Glasgow Rangers in May 2018. He guided the side to the Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21, and then in November 2021 he took over the job at Aston Villa.
