About

Susan Dent was born in November 1964 in Woking, Surrey, England. She pursued her education at Somerville College, Oxford, where she earned a BA in modern languages, and subsequently obtained a master’s degree in German from Princeton University. Following her studies, she spent a year teaching German in New York before returning to the UK. Dent began her career at Oxford University Press, where she initially worked on bilingual dictionaries before transitioning to compiling English dictionaries. Her extensive knowledge of language and her engaging presentation style have established her as a notable figure in both academic and popular contexts.

Dent gained widespread recognition for her role as the resident lexicographer and adjudicator in “Dictionary Corner” on the Channel 4 game show “Countdown,” a position she has held since 1992. She has made over 5,000 appearances on the show, providing etymological insights and commentary. Her involvement expanded to include the post-watershed comedy version, “8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.” Beyond her television work, Dent has authored numerous books on the English language, including her annual “Language Reports” for Oxford University Press from 2003 to 2007, and other titles such as “Winning Words” (2005) and “Word Perfect: Etymological Entertainment For Every Day of the Year” (2020).

Her career progression includes acting roles, such as appearing as herself in the BBC sitcom “Not Going Out” (2017) and “Meet the Richardsons” (2020). She also presented the Channel 4 web series “Susie Dent’s Guide to Swearing” (2017), exploring the history of English swear words. In 2019, Dent launched the gold award-winning podcast “Something Rhymes With Purple” with Gyles Brandreth, leading to live theatre stage residencies. In 2023, she embarked on a solo tour titled “The Secret Lives of Words.” Her contributions to literature and language were recognized with an appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2024 Birthday Honours.
