Susie Dent

Susie Dent gained widespread recognition for her long-standing role as the resident lexicographer and adjudicator in ‘Dictionary Corner’ on the Channel 4 game show ‘Countdown,’ a position she has held since 1992 and where she has made over 5,000 appearances. Her deep expertise, built on a BA in modern languages from Somerville College, Oxford, and a Master’s degree in German from Princeton University, initially led her to teach German in New York before joining Oxford University Press. There, she transitioned from compiling bilingual dictionaries to leading the compilation of English dictionaries, solidifying her extensive knowledge of language. Her involvement with ‘Countdown’ further expanded to include the popular post-watershed comedy version, ‘8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.’ In 2003, Dent released her first major publication, ‘The Language Report,’ for Oxford University Press.

Dent continued her prolific writing career with her annual ‘Language Reports’ for Oxford University Press from 2003 to 2007, alongside other notable titles such as ‘Winning Words’ (2005) and ‘Word Perfect: Etymological Entertainment For Every Day of the Year’ (2020). Her significant contributions to the field of language were formally recognized with her appointment as Honorary Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading in 2016. Expanding her media presence, Dent appeared as herself in the BBC sitcom ‘Not Going Out’ in 2017 and simultaneously wrote and presented the Channel 4 web series ‘Susie Dent’s Guide to Swearing,’ a series exploring the rich history of English swear words. In 2019, Dent launched the gold award-winning podcast ‘Something Rhymes With Purple’ with Gyles Brandreth, which has since led to successful live theatre stage residencies across the UK.

Looking ahead, Dent co-wrote the romantic radio drama ‘Only One Word for Love,’ slated for release in 2025, continuing to diversify her creative endeavors across various media.
