Tamera Young was born on October 30, 1986, in Wilmington, North Carolina. She attended Emsley A. Laney High School, where she became the all-time leading scorer and had her number 11 jersey retired. Her collegiate career at James Madison University saw her establish records, including the Colonial Athletic Association’s all-time scoring record, during her tenure from 2004 to 2008. In her senior year, she led James Madison to the third round of the 2008 WNIT. Young’s performance earned her accolades such as AP honorable mention All-American and CAA Player of the Year in 2008, three First-team All-CAA selections from 2006 to 2008, and a spot on the CAA All-Defensive Team in 2006.
Young’s professional career began when she was drafted by the Atlanta Dream as the 8th overall pick in the first round of the 2008 WNBA Draft, making her the first player from James Madison University to play in the WNBA. She wore number 23 in her first season with the Dream, later switching to number 11. In August 2009, Young was traded to the Chicago Sky, where she played for nine seasons and contributed to the team reaching the 2014 WNBA Finals. Her WNBA journey also included stints with the Las Vegas Aces from 2018 to 2019 and a brief period with the Seattle Storm in 2021 before announcing her retirement on July 8, 2021. Throughout her WNBA career, Young maintained averages of 7.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game across 372 regular season games.
Beyond the WNBA, Tamera Young also played professionally overseas in various countries, including Latvia (Cesis, 2008-2009), Turkey (Pankup, 2009-2010; Istanbul University, 2011-2012), France (Basket Landes, 2010-2011), and Israel (Maccabi Bnot Ashdod, 2012), where she won the 2012 Israeli Cup and was named MVP. In the 2014 offseason, she joined América de Recife in the Brazilian championship.
