Thelma Madine

Thelma Madine, born Thelma Makin in Liverpool in 1952, established herself as a notable figure in dressmaking. Her early career involved working in a telephone manager’s office after leaving school. She later gained basic sewing knowledge from her mother, a seamstress. In 1971, at 18, she married Kenny Madine, a businessman, and they had four children: Kenneth, Tracey, and Hayley, also adopting a daughter named Katrina. Following her divorce in 1999, Thelma began selling handmade dresses from a market stall, leveraging a loan from her aunt and her divorce settlement.

Her business grew significantly after she started her children’s clothing chain, ‘Madine’s Miniatures’, in Liverpool in 2002. She specialized in elaborate Communion and christening outfits, inspired by historical designs. Although her initial business venture faced challenges and was forced to close, she successfully re-established it in 2006 with financial support from her aunt and a business partner. Her work with children’s attire led to a request from a traveler woman for a wedding dress for her daughter. This marked a turning point, as more requests followed, culminating in the opening of her well-known wedding dress shop.

Madine’s unique designs and her work within the travelling community attracted media attention, notably from Dr. Jenny Popplewell, creator of ‘Big Fat Gypsy Weddings’. Despite initial reluctance due to previous negative portrayals of the traveller community, Madine agreed to participate, and the Channel 4 show became a success. Her career expanded to include wedding planning services, and in 2012, she authored ‘Tales of the Gypsy Dressmaker’. In 2014, she collaborated with The English Ladies Co. to launch a range of ceramic figurines called ‘Gypsy Wedding Dreams’, based on her iconic wedding dress designs. Her creations, often adorned with elements like Swarovski crystals, are recognized for their distinct and elaborate style.
