Thomas McLarty

Thomas McLarty established a distinguished career in public service and business, beginning with his early leadership as Student Body President at the University of Arkansas, where he graduated summa cum laude with a BBA in 1968. Following his election to the Arkansas House of Representatives, where he served from 1971 to 1973, McLarty expanded the family’s truck leasing business, McLarty Leasing. His influence within the Democratic Party grew through his service on the Democratic National Committee from 1974 to 1976, and as chairman of the State Democratic Party, contributing to the successful campaigns of Governor David Pryor and President Bill Clinton. From 1983 to 1992, McLarty served as Chairman and CEO of Arkla, Inc., a significant natural gas company.

After his tenure as Chief of Staff, McLarty transitioned to Counselor to President Clinton for more than five years, participating in Cabinet meetings and continuing his work with the National Economic Council. Expanding his international portfolio, McLarty was appointed White House Coordinator for the Centennial Games in Atlanta and organized the influential 1994 Summit of the Americas in Miami. His successful orchestration of the Summit led to his appointment as Special Envoy for the Americas in December 1996, a role he held until concluding his government service in June 1998.
