About

Christopher John Matthews was born on December 17, 1945, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father, Herb Matthews, was a court reporter, and his mother was Mary Teresa Shields. Matthews attended La Salle College High School and graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1967. He further pursued graduate studies in economics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Institute of Politics. Early in his career, Matthews served in the United States Peace Corps in Swaziland from 1968 to 1970 as a trade development adviser.

Matthews’s political career began in Washington, D.C., where he initially worked as an officer with the United States Capitol Police. He then served on the staffs of four Democratic Members of Congress, including Senators Frank Moss and Edmund Muskie. From 1974, Matthews made an unsuccessful bid for Pennsylvania’s 4th congressional district seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. He later served as a presidential speechwriter during the Carter Administration and spent six years as Chief of Staff to Speaker of the House of Representatives Tip O’Neill, where he was involved in political discussions with the Reagan Administration. His transition to journalism included a 13-year tenure as Washington, D.C., bureau chief for the San Francisco Examiner (1987–2000) and two years as a nationally syndicated columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. During this period, he covered significant global events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first all-races election in South Africa, and the Good Friday Peace Talks in Northern Ireland.

In 1997, Matthews launched his weeknight talk show, “Hardball with Chris Matthews,” which aired on America’s Talking before moving to MSNBC, continuing until 2020. This program featured political pundits and elected officials discussing current events. From 2002 to 2013, he also hosted “The Chris Matthews Show,” a syndicated weekend political roundtable. Matthews has authored eight best-selling books, including “Hardball: How Politics is Played, Told by One Who Knows the Game” (1988) and “Jack Kennedy: Elusive Hero” (2011), which spent 12 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list. Following his retirement from “Hardball” in March 2020, he returned to MSNBC in September 2022 as a political analyst for the “Morning Joe” program.
