Thomas Paul Aspinall was born on April 11, 1993, in Salford, England. His martial arts journey began at the age of seven, following his father’s footsteps, at the Leigh Self Defence Studio in Leigh. Initially training in catch wrestling and boxing, Aspinall later transitioned to jiu-jitsu, where he achieved considerable success, winning the British Open in Brazilian jiu-jitsu across all belt classes except black belt. His exposure to mixed martial arts intensified when his father became a jiu-jitsu instructor for Team Kaobon, prompting Aspinall’s shift into the sport.
Aspinall started his amateur career at 18, compiling a record of nine wins and no losses, predominantly via knockout or submission. He made his professional debut with MMA Versus UK before competing in BAMMA and Full Contact Contender, achieving a record of 4 wins and 2 losses. After a 2.5-year break from professional MMA, he signed a five-fight contract with Cage Warriors, having previously declined a UFC offer to gain more experience. After two quick victories in Cage Warriors, he ultimately signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He is recognized for his finishing capabilities, with six of his eight UFC victories concluding by the halfway point of the first round. He holds the UFC record for the shortest average fight time at two minutes and two seconds. As of July 1, 2025, he is ranked #9 in the UFC men’s pound-for-pound rankings.
His UFC tenure began officially on July 25, 2020, with a technical knockout victory over Jake Collier, earning him a “Performance of the Night” award. Aspinall continued securing notable wins, including a submission against Andrei Arlovski in February 2021 and another technical knockout against Serghei Spivac in September 2021, each earning him further “Performance of the Night” bonuses. After a knee injury sustained in a July 2022 fight against Curtis Blaydes, he made a successful return in July 2023, defeating Marcin Tybura by TKO in just over a minute. His career reached a significant milestone in November 2023 when he won the Interim UFC Heavyweight Championship by knocking out Sergei Pavlovich, again securing a “Performance of the Night” award. On July 27, 2024, he defended his interim title against Curtis Blaydes with a first-round knockout, and on June 21, 2025, he was promoted to undisputed UFC Heavyweight Champion following Jon Jones’ retirement. He is scheduled to defend his title against Ciryl Gane on October 25, 2025.
