About

Toni Collette (born Collett) was born on November 1, 1972, in Blacktown, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She is the eldest of three children to Judith Cook, a customer service representative, and Bob Collett, a truck driver. From the age of six, she was raised in suburban Sydney. At age eleven, she displayed a notable ability for acting when she faked appendicitis, leading to a convincing performance that resulted in her appendix being removed, despite no medical need. At 16, she left school to pursue acting, enrolling in the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). She left NIDA after 18 months to make her feature film debut in “The Efficiency Expert” (1991), where she appeared alongside Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins, earning an Australian Film Institute nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Collette’s breakthrough arrived with her lead role as Muriel Heslop in “Muriel’s Wedding” (1994). For this film, she gained 40 pounds in seven weeks and received the Australian Best Actress in a Lead Role award, along with a Golden Globe nomination. In 1999, she gained international recognition and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Lynn Sear in “The Sixth Sense.” Her career continued to flourish with roles in critically acclaimed films such as “About a Boy” (2002) and “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006), earning her BAFTA nominations. On television, she starred in the Showtime series “United States of Tara” (2008–2011) as a suburban mother with dissociative identity disorder, which earned her a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series and a Golden Globe Award. She later received Emmy nominations for her work in the miniseries “Unbelievable” (2019) and “The Staircase” (2022).

Beyond acting, Collette has also pursued a music career. She formed the band Toni Collette & the Finish with her husband, Dave Galafassi, releasing their debut album “Beautiful Awkward Pictures” in 2006, for which she wrote all eleven tracks. She is also a co-founder of the film production company Vocab Films, established in 2017. Her commitment to diverse projects and character-driven performances has solidified her reputation in the entertainment industry.
