After the first round of his career, the professional boxer Tony Danza decided that he wanted to try and take a swing at acting with the famous long-running television series Taxi. The versatile Italian-American, “Dangerous Tony Danza,” was practicing his moves in a boxing gymnasium when he was discovered by a producer for Taxi. Since that first discovery, Danza has journeyed through the highway of acting, garnering an Emmy nomination, four Golden Globe nominations and a People’s Choice Award. Alongside Taxi, he is known best for Who’s The Boss, Angel’s In The Outfield and The Practice.
Being discovered for his first talent of boxing gave Danza a strong advantage, as he got to play a cab driver and a part-time boxer, getting to show his moves on television. The eight-season show Taxi put him at the top of the list for getting recognized alongside today’s most famous names like Danny DeVito and Judd Hirsch. Danza won the 2007 TV Land Medallion Award for his work on Taxi, along with the rest of his co-stars. After his first hit television show came to an end, he moved onto another award-winning sitcom, Who’s The Boss, which made Danza known for his beloved sitcom personality. Who’s The Boss also ran for eight seasons and garnered him many accolades, including three Golden Globe nominations.
The multi-talented actor has also given back to his New York community, working with youth development groups and cancer charities, including Voices Against Brain Cancer. Danza was also honored with the Hausman Humanitarian Award at the 2019 ADAPT Leadership Awards Gala for his humanitarian work. In addition to his most famous television shows, Danza can also be seen in Don Jon, 12 Angry Men, and many popular stage productions.
