About

Tyler Gerald Burrell was born on August 22, 1967, in Grants Pass, Oregon. His early life included working as a bartender at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and fighting forest fires. He pursued higher education, earning a BA from Southern Oregon University and an MFA from Penn State. His acting career began with appearances in films such as “Black Hawk Down” (2001) and “Dawn of the Dead” (2004), alongside roles in Broadway productions like “Macbeth” (2000) and off-Broadway plays including “Burn This.” He also had multiple guest appearances on television series such as “Law & Order.” These early experiences provided a foundation for his later success in comedy and voice work.

Burrell gained significant recognition for his role as Phil Dunphy in the acclaimed ABC sitcom “Modern Family,” which premiered in 2009. His portrayal of Phil Dunphy earned him widespread critical acclaim, accumulating five Emmy nominations and two wins for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, as well as several Screen Actors Guild Awards. Beyond “Modern Family,” Burrell expanded his filmography to include voice roles in animated features such as “Mr. Peabody & Sherman” (2014), “Muppets Most Wanted” (2014), “Finding Dory” (2016), and “Storks” (2016). He also appeared in live-action films like “Rough Night” (2017).

In addition to his acting career, Burrell ventured into production, establishing Desert Whale Productions, which secured an overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. He also developed and acted in the web series “Boondoggle” (2016), which earned him a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Actor in a Short Form Comedy or Drama Series. His entrepreneurial activities extend to the hospitality sector, owning The Eating Establishment restaurant in Park City, Utah, and two bars in Salt Lake City, Bar X and Beer Bar. During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Burrell and his wife initiated the “Tip Your Server” fund to support out-of-work wait staff in Utah, demonstrating his engagement beyond entertainment.
