Born on May 14, 1979, in Isla Vista, California, Urijah Christopher Faber established himself early as a skilled wrestler, qualifying for the NCAA national wrestling tournament in 2001 and 2002 while attending the University of California, Davis, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Human Development. His professional mixed martial arts career began in 2003 with Gladiator Challenge, quickly leading to championship titles in both Gladiator Challenge and King of the Cage by 2004. These early achievements showcased his potent combination of wrestling and developing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills. He later received a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Fábio “Pateta” Prado, further diversifying his fighting repertoire.
Faber’s career significantly advanced when he joined World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) in 2006. He secured the WEC Featherweight Championship on March 17, 2006, at WEC 19 and maintained this title for over two and a half years, defending it successfully five times, a record within the WEC featherweight division. His notable victories in this period include wins against Jens Pulver and Dominick Cruz. In 2010, following his WEC tenure, Faber transitioned to the bantamweight division and joined the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), where he continued to compete at a high level. Throughout his career, Faber sought the UFC Bantamweight Championship on three occasions, including for an interim title, and challenged for the WEC Featherweight Championship two additional times.
Faber officially retired from MMA in December 2016 after a unanimous decision victory over Brad Pickett at UFC on Fox 22 in Sacramento and was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in the Modern-era wing in 2017. He made a return to the Octagon in 2019, defeating Ricky Simón via TKO in the first round at UFC Fight Night 155, demonstrating his enduring skill and competitive spirit. Beyond his fighting career, Faber founded Team Alpha Male, a prominent MMA gym, and pursued entrepreneurial ventures, including a management company, a dental company, and a construction business.
