Vincent Lamont Baker, born on November 23, 1971, in Lake Wales, Florida, established a significant presence in professional basketball. After attending Old Saybrook High School in Connecticut, he played college basketball for the University of Hartford. In his inaugural season in 1989, he averaged 4.7 points and 2.9 rebounds per game, earning a spot on the North Atlantic Conference All-Rookie Team. By his junior year, Baker was averaging 27.6 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game, though his team did not make it to the NCAA tournament. He finished his college career with 2,238 points, a school record. His jersey, number 42, was retired by the Hartford Hawks.
Baker was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks as the 8th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. During his four seasons with the Bucks (1993–1997), he emerged as a leading player alongside Glenn Robinson, earning three consecutive All-Star selections. His tenure in Milwaukee saw him record career highs, including a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists on March 14, 1995. He consistently averaged over 21.0 points per game during the 1995–96 and 1996–97 seasons. In 1997, he was traded to the Seattle SuperSonics and continued to perform at a high level, helping the team secure a strong 1997-98 NBA season, including a first-round playoff win. He earned another All-Star selection during his time with the SuperSonics and was recognized with an All-NBA Second Team selection in 1998, followed by an Olympic Gold Medal with the USA Basketball team in 2000.
Following his successful period with the SuperSonics, Baker was traded to the Boston Celtics in 2002. His career later included stints with the New York Knicks (2004–2005), Houston Rockets (2005), and Los Angeles Clippers (2006). After retiring as a player, Baker transitioned into coaching. He has served as an assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks since 2018, contributing to their NBA championship win in 2021 and the NBA Cup championship in 2024. Off the court, Baker has engaged in philanthropic efforts, including establishing the Stand Tall Foundation to assist young people, and has openly discussed his recovery from alcoholism, using his experiences to support others.
