About

George Vincent Gilligan Jr. was born on February 10, 1967, in Richmond, Virginia. His interest in filmmaking began at an early age, encouraged by a friend’s mother who lent him Super 8 film cameras. He made science fiction films with his younger brother, Patrick, and won first prize in a film competition at the University of Virginia. Gilligan attended New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts on a scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in film production. During his time at NYU, he wrote the screenplay for “Home Fries,” which later became a film, and received the Virginia Governor’s Screenwriting Award in 1989. Film producer Mark Johnson, one of the competition judges, acknowledged Gilligan’s imaginative writing.

Gilligan’s career progressed significantly when he joined the Fox television drama “The X-Files” as a writer. He contributed to 29 episodes and served as a producer in various capacities for 191 episodes between 1996 and 2002. He also co-created the spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen.” A major turning point in his career came with the creation of the AMC crime drama series “Breaking Bad,” which ran from 2008 to 2013. Gilligan served as creator, primary writer, executive producer, and director for the series, which garnered widespread critical acclaim. He extended the franchise with the spin-off prequel series “Better Call Saul” (2015–2022) and the sequel film “El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie” (2019).

Throughout his career, Gilligan has received numerous accolades for his work. He won two Primetime Emmy Awards, six Writers Guild of America Awards, two Critics’ Choice Television Awards, two Producers Guild of America Awards, one Directors Guild of America Award, and a BAFTA. His upcoming series, “Pluribus,” a science fiction drama described as being in the vein of “The X-Files” and “The Twilight Zone,” is set to premiere on Apple TV+ in November 2025. Gilligan has maintained a long-standing overall deal with Sony Pictures Television, most recently renewing it for an additional four years.
