About

Ian Bremmer, born on November 12, 1969, in Chelsea, Massachusetts, pursued his academic interests early, enrolling in high school at age 11 and university at 15. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international relations, magna cum laude, from Tulane University in 1989. He then went on to complete a Master of Arts degree in 1991 and a Doctor of Philosophy in political science in 1994, both from Stanford University. His doctoral dissertation focused on “The politics of ethnicity: Russians in the Ukraine.” In 1998, Bremmer founded Eurasia Group, a political risk research and consulting firm, which initially concentrated on emerging markets but later expanded its scope to include frontier and developed economies, as well as geo-technology and energy issues. The firm has established offices in major cities worldwide, including London (2000), Washington, DC (2005), Tokyo (2015), San Francisco and São Paulo (2016), and Brasilia and Singapore (2017).

Bremmer is recognized for his contributions to the field of political risk, including coining terms such as “G-Zero,” which refers to a global power vacuum where no single nation or group effectively sets the international agenda. He is also credited with developing the concept of “state capitalism” in his 2010 book “The End of the Free Market,” examining the increasing role of governments in economies. His extensive literary output includes eleven books, notably the New York Times bestsellers “Us vs. Them: The Failure of Globalism” and “The Power of Crisis.” Bremmer serves as a foreign affairs columnist and editor-at-large for Time magazine and hosts “GZERO World with Ian Bremmer” on US public television. He has held teaching positions at New York University and currently teaches at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs, in addition to being a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center.

In recent years, Bremmer has continued to be a prominent voice in international affairs, serving as rapporteur of the UN High-Level Advisory Body on Artificial Intelligence in 2023-2024, contributing to its 2024 report on AI-related risks and opportunities. He frequently provides analysis on major news networks such as CNN, MSNBC, and FOX, offering perspectives on complex geopolitical issues. Through GZERO Media, which he launched in 2017 with Eurasia Group, he provides accessible news coverage of international affairs, including through “Puppet Regime” segments. His career reflects a sustained effort to analyze and communicate global political dynamics to diverse audiences.
