Walker Dwain Zimmerman was born on May 19, 1993, in Lawrenceville, Georgia. He began his youth soccer career at the Gwinnett Soccer Association and also played for Brookwood High School. His collegiate career included two seasons with the Furman Paladins from 2011 to 2012, where he earned accolades such as First Team All-Conference in 2011 and Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in the same year, followed by a National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division I Men’s All-America Second Team honor in 2012. His performance in college led to him signing a Generation Adidas deal, setting the stage for his professional journey.
Zimmerman was drafted seventh overall by FC Dallas in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. After overcoming early injury challenges, he became a regular starter, contributing significantly to FC Dallas winning the Supporters’ Shield and the U.S. Open Cup in 2016. In December 2017, he was traded to expansion side Los Angeles FC, where he helped the team secure the Supporters’ Shield in 2019 and was selected for the MLS All-Star team and MLS Best XI. His career progression continued with a move to Nashville SC in February 2020. With Nashville SC, he distinguished himself by winning consecutive MLS Defender of the Year awards in 2020 and 2021, and earned multiple MLS Best XI selections from 2019 to 2023. He also represented the United States Men’s National Team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, playing in all four matches.
His international career began with his debut for the U.S. national team in January 2017. He was part of the squad that finished as runners-up in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2019 and won the tournament in 2021. He also contributed to the United States winning the CONCACAF Nations League in 2023. In 2022, Nashville SC signed Zimmerman to a contract extension through 2025, making him a Designated Player, a notable achievement for an American defender in MLS history.
