United States Gary Cohn is an American business leader and investor, recognized for his expertise in financial markets and economic policy.
Before serving in the White House, Cohn was president and COO of Goldman Sachs, where he worked for more than 25 years.
Cohn was appointed vice-chairman of IBM on January 5, 2021.
He serves on the corporate boards of Abyrx.
He serves on the corporate boards of Gro Intelligence.
He serves on the corporate boards of Lazurite.
He serves on the corporate boards of Nanopay.
He is the Chairman of the Board of Pallas Advisors, a national security strategic advisory firm based in Washington, D.C.
He serves on the advisory board for Starling. In April 2020, Cohn was appointed to the Risk & Governance Advisory Board of Starling, a technology company in applied behavior sciences.
He is on the Board of Advisors for Hoyos Integrity, a startup company employing biometric blockchain technology for secure communications and digital payments.
He is on the Board of Spring Labs, a startup using blockchain technology to share consumer credit data.
He is on the Board of Sotera Digital Security, a company that has created a mobile phone for secure communications.
Cohn is also a key advisor for Machine Zone.

Gary Cohn was born on August 27, 1960, in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in Shaker Heights. He was diagnosed with dyslexia at a young age, an experience later highlighted in Malcolm Gladwell’s book “David and Goliath.” Cohn earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business administration from American University in 1982. He began his career at U.S. Steel before transitioning to trading options on the New York Commodities Exchange from 1982 to 1990. In 1990, Cohn joined Goldman Sachs, where he would spend over 25 years in various leadership roles.
At Goldman Sachs, Cohn’s career progressed quickly. He became a partner in 1994, then led the commodities department in 1996. By 2002, he was the head of the Fixed Income, Currency and Commodities (FICC) division, and in 2003, he became co-head of Equities. In January 2004, he was named co-head of global securities businesses. His tenure at Goldman Sachs culminated in his role as President and Chief Operating Officer from 2006 to 2016, also serving on the firm’s Board of Directors and as Chairman of the Firmwide Client and Business Standards Committee.
From 2017 to 2018, Cohn served as Assistant to the President for Economic Policy and Director of the National Economic Council in the U.S. government. In this role, he was the chief economic advisor to the president, managing economic policy and leading efforts to stimulate economic growth through tax and regulatory reform, including the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. After his public service, Cohn resumed his career in the private sector as an investor and advisor, joining IBM as Vice Chairman in 2021. He also sits on various corporate and advisory boards, focusing on sectors such as cybersecurity, blockchain, regulatory technology, and medical technology. Cohn is also actively involved in philanthropy, supporting healthcare and education initiatives.
