Wanda Sykes

Wanda Sykes has established herself as a prominent figure in comedy and acting, known for her sharp wit and versatile performances across television and film. After gaining significant momentum in her comedy career by opening for Chris Rock at Caroline’s Comedy Club, Wanda Sykes went on to join the writing team for ‘The Chris Rock Show’ in 1997. This pivotal role earned her a Primetime Emmy Award in 1999 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety, Music, or Comedy Special. Sykes initiated her stand-up comedy journey in 1987 at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, D.C., later moving to New York City in 1992 to hone her craft.

Her television presence expanded with her starring in the Fox network sitcom ‘Wanda at Large’ in 2003, followed by an hour-long Comedy Central special, ‘Tongue Untied,’ the same year. In 2001, she received an American Comedy Award for Funniest Female Stand-Up Comic. Sykes continued to build her diverse portfolio throughout the 2000s, being named one of the 25 funniest people in America by Entertainment Weekly in 2004. That same year, she published her humorous book, ‘Yeah, I Said It.’ Her film career saw her appear in ‘Monster-in-Law’ in 2005 and lend her voice to animated features including ‘Over the Hedge,’ ‘Barnyard,’ and ‘Brother Bear 2’ in 2006.

Her esteemed presence in the entertainment industry led to her co-hosting the 94th Academy Awards in 2022, a major career milestone. In 2023, Sykes further showcased her versatility as a guest host for ‘The Daily Show.’
