About

William Emerson Arnett was born on May 4, 1970, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Edith Alexandra (Palk) and Emerson James Arnett. His father was a corporate lawyer and brewer, serving as president and CEO of Molson Breweries from 1997 to 2000. Arnett briefly attended Lakefield College School, but after being asked not to return, he pursued theatre classes at the Tarragon Theatre and later graduated from Leaside High School. In 1990, he moved to New York City to study acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, appearing in plays and independent films.

His career gained significant traction with his role as George Oscar “Gob” Bluth II in the Fox series “Arrested Development,” which ran from 2003 to 2006, with subsequent seasons on Netflix in 2013 and 2018-2019. This role earned him his first Emmy nomination in 2006 and established his comedic persona. Concurrently, his unique baritone voice led to extensive voice-over work, including campaigns for GMC trucks since 1998, and roles in animated films such as “Ice Age: The Meltdown” (2006), “Ratatouille” (2007), “Horton Hears a Who!” (2008), “Monsters vs. Aliens” (2009), and “Despicable Me” (2010).

Arnett continued to build a diverse career, starring in films like “Let’s Go to Prison” (2006) and “Blades of Glory” (2007), and taking on recurring television roles, notably as Devon Banks in “30 Rock” (2007–2013), for which he received four Emmy nominations. In recent years, he has voiced the titular character in Netflix’s “BoJack Horseman” (2014–2020) and Batman in “The Lego Movie” franchise (2014–2019). He also hosts the reality series “Lego Masters” (2020–present) and co-hosts the “SmartLess” podcast (2020–present), further cementing his status as a prominent figure in entertainment.
