Kevin L. Johnson developed an interest in acting while attending Clemson University, where he initially pursued an English major. An assignment to see a theatrical production prompted him to enroll in acting classes, which helped him overcome shyness. His early theatrical roles included ‘Sam’ in “Crossing Delancey” at Clemson Little Theatre and ‘Oswald’ in a Shakespeare in the Park production of “King Lear.” He also performed as ‘Willy Wonka’ in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” at Easley Foothills Playhouse.
After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in English and a minor in advertising, Johnson secured an agent and began appearing in commercials for brands such as North Carolina State Lottery and Burger King. He quickly transitioned into television and film, landing his first television role on “One Tree Hill” and his first lead film role in “Destiny Road.” His career progressed with notable appearances in Cinemax’s “Banshee,” CBS’s “Reckless,” MTV’s “Finding Carter,” FOX’s “The Resident,” OWN’s “Greenleaf,” and OWN’s “If Loving You Is Wrong.”
Johnson is widely recognized for his recurring role as ‘Sam Dermody’ in the Netflix series “Ozark,” a part that expanded significantly from an initial two-episode booking to a presence across all four seasons. He has also featured in major films such as “Prisoners” alongside Jake Gyllenhaal, “Careful What You Wish For” with Nick Jonas, “American Animals” with Evan Peters, and “Blue Ridge” opposite Johnathon Schaech. More recently, Johnson is set to appear as ‘Eric’ in Netflix’s “Florida Man” and will guest star in “Stranger Things.”
