Wilson Reis is a formidable mixed martial artist from Brazil who competes in the Flyweight division. A former EliteXC Bantamweight Champion, he has also competed in Cage Warriors, Bellator, ShoXC and for UFC and appeared on The Ultimate Fighter: Live in Dominick Cruz’s team as an assistant Jiu-Jitsu coach.
Hailing from Januaria, state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, Reis was born on January 6, 1985 and moved to São Paulo as a small child. He first tried martial arts when he was ten years old after watching action movies featuring the likes of Bruce Lee and Jean Claude Van Damme, and a few months later he started practising judo and grew fond of grappling. Reis and his coach Ernesto Luciano Bandeira both realised that Wilson had a preference for the ground in judo, and added jiu jitsu to his routine when he was 13.
His rise to the top began when he made the prestigious G13 team in São Paulo and began to earn all his belts from the team’s founder Roberto Godoi. On the day he received his black belt from Godoi he moved to the United States to begin coaching as a grappling instructor at a Philadelphia gym.
Reis soon made a name for himself around the Tri-State area and Delaware valley competing in No Gi Tournaments, and in 2008 Reis stormed to victory in the EliteXC Bantamweight Championship against Abel Callum. A stint with Bellator Fighting Championship followed, and in 2013 he signed with the UFC where he competed for 7 years. Still fighting into the new decade, he signed a contract with ARES FC in 2020.
