Xiye Bastida, born on April 18, 2002, in Atlacomulco, Mexico, is a prominent climate justice activist from the Otomi-Toltec Indigenous community. Her commitment to environmental justice began at an early age, influenced by her parents, who are also environmentalists. Her family relocated to New York City in 2015 after extreme flooding affected their hometown of San Pedro Tultepec following a three-year drought. This personal experience solidified her resolve to address climate change and its disproportionate impact on vulnerable communities.
Upon moving to New York, Bastida quickly became involved in the climate movement. She joined the Administration Committee of People’s Climate Movement, where she organized a two-month-long Activism Training Program. Her activism gained international recognition when she attended her first United Nations climate conference in February 2017, advocating for the integration of Indigenous knowledge into decision-making. This participation earned her the Spirit of the UN award in 2018. Later, she became a lead organizer for Fridays For Future NYC, notably organizing a strike that drew 300,000 participants to New York City streets. In April 2020, she co-founded Re-Earth Initiative, an international youth-led organization focused on the intersectionality of the climate crisis. She is currently pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in Policy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Throughout her career, Bastida has consistently taken her message to global platforms. She was the sole youth speaker at the Biden Climate Summit in 2021, addressing 40 heads of state. Her engagements include participating in COP25, the United Nations Climate Summit, the Noble Price Summit, and giving a TED Talk in 2020. She has contributed to the anthology ‘All We Can Save’ as the opening essayist and has written numerous op-eds. Her work has been featured in publications such as The New York Times, Vogue, Teen Vogue, and TIME, underscoring her role as a critical voice in the climate discourse.
