About

Yan Birch’s early life in Sweden was deeply influenced by the arts, with his father being an actor-comedian, producer, director, and musician. This environment led Birch to begin playing the flute and trumpet at a young age and to appear in stage plays such as “Miss Julie.” His television career in Sweden included roles in the youth programs “Barnjournalen” and “Unga Tvaan,” an equivalent to MTV at the time. After earning a BA in Mechanical Engineering and a degree in Mathematics from Teknikum in Vaxjo, Sweden, Birch decided to pursue his passion for acting by moving to Hollywood.

Upon arriving in Hollywood, Birch quickly secured acting roles in music videos and commercials, collaborating with notable figures such as Billy Idol and David Fincher. His American feature film debut included roles in “Slumber Party Massacre III” (1990) and “The Runestone” (1991). These early successes led to further international work, including a starring role in the Italian feature film “Scrondo” and appearances in Italian television shows. A significant turning point in his career came in 1991 with his role as “The Stairmaster” in Wes Craven’s horror film “The People Under the Stairs.” This role established his presence in the horror genre, alongside his steady work in daytime television soaps like “Santa Barbara” and “The Young and the Restless,” where he leveraged his distinctive appearance to play diverse characters from health club owners to mobsters.

Birch continued to expand his acting and production work throughout the 1990s and 2000s. He appeared in independent films such as “Cyber Bandits” (1995), alongside Grace Jones and Adam Ant, and “Sucker” (1998). In 1999, he was cast as the “Guardian Angel” in Paramount’s “Bless the Child” (2000), directed by Chuck Russell and starring Kim Basinger and Christina Ricci. Beyond acting, Birch ventured into production, co-owning Pure Entertainment. He produced “Mega Man” for Fox Television in 1996 and served as producer and line producer for the feature film “Essence of Echoes” (2002), in which he also played the main villain, and the documentary “Gone Soul Fishin'” for MTV. His recurring role as “Kane,” the head of the Warlocks, in the hit WB series “Charmed,” demonstrated his versatility across different television genres. Recently, he’s been involved in discussions for more independent films including “Sky Sharks,” “Waking Nightmare,” and “Agramon’s Gate.”
