Herschel Junior Walker was born on March 3, 1962, in Wrightsville, Georgia. He excelled in multiple sports during his time at Johnson County High School, including football, basketball, and track. In his senior year of football, he rushed for 3,167 yards, leading the Trojans to their first state championship and earning the inaugural Dial Award as the 1979 national high school scholar-athlete of the year. He continued his athletic career at the University of Georgia, where he became a three-time unanimous All-American in football. Walker won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award in 1982, playing a pivotal role in Georgia’s undefeated season and national championship win in 1980.
Walker’s professional football career began in the United States Football League (USFL) with the New Jersey Generals in 1983. He was named the USFL’s MVP in its final season in 1985. Following the USFL’s dissolution, he joined the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys in 1986 after being drafted in 1985. With the Cowboys, he earned consecutive Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors in 1987 and 1988, demonstrating versatility by playing multiple offensive positions including halfback, fullback, and wide receiver. In 1988, he achieved NFL career highs of 1,514 rushing yards and 505 receiving yards, accumulating over 2,000 combined yards from scrimmage. After being traded to the Minnesota Vikings in 1989, he later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants before concluding his NFL career with a second stint with the Cowboys in 1997. Throughout his NFL career, Walker played 187 games, accumulating 8,225 rushing yards and 61 rushing touchdowns.
Beyond football, Walker represented the United States in bobsleigh at the 1992 Winter Olympics, placing seventh in the two-man competition. He also transitioned into mixed martial arts, competing professionally for Strikeforce, where he secured two victories by technical knockout. In his business endeavors, Walker founded H. Walker Enterprises in 2002, an umbrella company that included Renaissance Man Food Services, focusing on chicken products. His dedication and multi-faceted career continued into public service, serving as a co-chair on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. In 2025, he was confirmed as the United States Ambassador to the Bahamas.
