Yannis Pappas was born on August 24, 1976, in Brooklyn, New York, to Greek parents, Chris and Anna Pappas. He grew up in Park Slope alongside his two older brothers. Pappas pursued higher education at American University in Washington, D.C., where he focused his studies on American Studies and History. His career in comedy began in 2000, though he paused performing for a period after being shot during a robbery attempt. He recommenced his stand-up career in late 2004 and embarked on comedy full-time starting in 2008.
Throughout his career, Pappas has achieved several milestones. He has been featured on television programs such as AXS TV, TruTV’s ‘How To Be a Grown Up,’ VH1’s ‘Best Week Ever,’ Fox Business, and ‘Good Morning America.’ He holds the distinction of being the first comedian to perform stand-up on ‘The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon’ during a non-aired test show. In the mid-2000s, Pappas co-founded Ditch Films, a comedy production company, with director Jesse Scaturro. Through Ditch Films, he developed popular internet characters, including Maurica (premiered 2010) and Mr. Panos (premiered 2009). His first special, part of Comedy Central’s ‘The Half Hour’ series, aired in June 2014. In 2016, he released the comedy album ‘Let Me Be Yannis,’ which received the Album of the Year award from SiriusXM Comedy for 2016. In 2019, his hour-long special ‘Blowing the Light’ was released on YouTube, produced by Andrew Schulz.
In addition to his stand-up, Pappas has held various hosting positions. From June 2013, he co-hosted ‘The Bracket’ on MSG Network with Chris Distefano. Later in 2013, he co-anchored ‘Fusion Live,’ a live primetime news show on the Fusion network, alongside Marianna Antonio and Pedro Andrade, until its cancellation in December 2014. In Spring 2015, he hosted the AOL Original Series ‘2 Point Lead,’ a sports comedy program. Pappas also co-hosted the weekly podcast ‘History Hyenas’ with Chris Distefano from February 2018 until its hiatus in March 2021. The podcast returned in November 2024. He also hosts ‘The Yannis Pappas Hour’ podcast, which began in January 2021. Prior to his full-time comedy career, Pappas worked in social services, including 9/11 disaster relief and assisting individuals experiencing mental illness and homelessness.
