In Paris in 2024, Yeldos Smetov completed his Olympic arc, winning gold in the under 60 kg category and adding the one title that had eluded him. The Kazakh judoka’s victory at the 2024 Olympics crowned a career built across three Games and more than a decade of podium finishes at the sport’s highest level.
His breakthrough came in 2014 at the Asian Games, where he claimed gold and announced himself among the lightweight division’s elite. The momentum carried into 2015, when he captured the World Championships title, followed by gold at the 2016 Asian Championships. That same run of form took him to the Rio 2016 Olympics, where he earned silver, marking his arrival on the sport’s biggest stage.
Rather than fading after that near miss, Smetov rebuilt and returned, taking bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics before his defining triumph in Paris. A champion at continental, world, and now double Olympic medal-winning level, he stands among Kazakhstan’s most decorated athletes, with a résumé spanning Asian Games, World Championships, Asian Championships, and three Olympic medals across three consecutive Games.
