Yingsha Sun was born on November 4, 2000, in Shijiazhuang, Hebei, China. Her table tennis career began to accelerate in January 2017 when she joined the national table tennis team of China, just sixteen months after being selected for the B team. This early progression marked the beginning of her rise in the sport. A significant early achievement came in 2018 at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where she secured gold medals in both women’s singles and mixed team alongside Wang Chuqin, demonstrating her potential on an international stage.
Sun continued to build her career, notably securing a crucial victory at the 2019 World Team Cup. In the finals against Japan, she mounted a comeback from a 10-7 deficit in the deciding fifth game to defeat Mima Ito, a match she later described as precious. Her consistent high-level performance led to her being ranked world No. 2 at the beginning of 2021. Despite a temporary shift in rankings due to China’s withdrawal from international events, the ITTF adjusted the Olympic seeding system, reaffirming her standing. Sun’s career progression saw her continually challenge and excel against top-tier opponents, solidifying her position as a leading athlete in table tennis.
Recent years have been marked by further significant achievements. At the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, Sun won her third gold medal after securing victories in the team and mixed doubles events, followed by a gold in the women’s singles final against Japan’s Hina Hayata. This singles victory extended China’s winning streak in the event to seven consecutive championships. In 2024, at the Paris Olympics, Sun earned the first mixed doubles gold medal for the Chinese table tennis team and added a women’s team gold, along with a women’s singles silver. Her exceptional performance was recognized at the closing ceremony, where she was selected to extinguish the Olympic flame as the representative of Asia, marking a historic first for a female athlete.
