Yoel Romero, a decorated Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling, has carved out a formidable career in mixed martial arts, known for his formidable power and impressive knockouts across multiple organizations. After becoming the 1999 World Champion in freestyle wrestling at 85 kg, defeating 1996 Olympic gold medalist Khadzhimurad Magomedov, Yoel Romero went on to secure a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 85 kg freestyle competition. His dominance in wrestling included two silver medals in the World Championships (2002, 2005) and two bronze medals (1998, 2001). Romero also claimed three gold medals at the World Cup in 1998, 2000, and 2005, alongside a gold medal at the 2003 Pan American Games, solidifying his elite status before transitioning to mixed martial arts.
Following his departure from the UFC in 2020, Romero signed a multi-fight deal with Bellator MMA, competing in the light heavyweight division. He continued to showcase his formidable power with TKO victories over Alex Polizzi in 2022 and Melvin Manhoef in 2022, and subsequently challenged for the Bellator Light Heavyweight World Championship in 2023. In 2024, Romero secured a unanimous decision victory over Thiago Santos. Expanding his combat sports presence, Romero made his debut in Mike Perry’s ‘Dirty Boxing Championship’ in November 2024, achieving a first-round knockout victory over Duane Crespo. In September 2025, Romero made his bare-knuckle boxing debut with the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), securing a TKO victory over Theo Doukas.
