About

Yu Darvish was born on August 16, 1986, in Osaka, Japan. His early life exposed him to a diverse background with a Japanese mother and an Iranian father. Darvish began his baseball journey in junior high, attracting scouts from both Japanese and Major League teams. He attended Tohoku High School in Sendai, a known baseball powerhouse, where he quickly became the ace pitcher. During his high school career, he achieved a 1.10 ERA, striking out 375 batters in 332.1 innings. A notable achievement was his no-hitter against Kumamoto Technical High School in 2004, solidifying his reputation as a pitching prodigy.

His professional career began in Japan with the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters from 2005 to 2011. During this period, he became one of the league’s most dominant pitchers, earning two Pacific League MVP awards (2007, 2009) and the prestigious Eiji Sawamura Award in 2007. He consistently led the league in strikeouts and maintained sub-2.00 ERAs. His success in Japan led to his posting to Major League Baseball in 2012, where he signed with the Texas Rangers. In his MLB debut season, he quickly made an impact, becoming an AL All-Star and the AL Rookie of the Month for April. He demonstrated remarkable strikeout ability, leading the league with 277 strikeouts in 2013, a season where he also finished second in Cy Young voting. His career has been marked by a diverse repertoire of pitches and a consistent ability to generate swings and misses, placing him among the league’s top pitchers.

Throughout his MLB career, Darvish has played for the Texas Rangers (2012–2017), Los Angeles Dodgers (2017), Chicago Cubs (2018–2020), and currently the San Diego Padres (2021–present). He has earned five All-Star selections in MLB (2012, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2021) and was named to the All-MLB First Team in 2020. Darvish has demonstrated resilience, returning from Tommy John surgery in 2015 to continue his career at a high level. He achieved significant milestones, including becoming the fastest pitcher to 1,500 strikeouts (2021) and the first Japanese-born pitcher to reach 2,000 MLB strikeouts (2024). In 2025, he broke the record for most combined career wins (204) between NPB and MLB for a Japanese-born pitcher, surpassing Hiroki Kuroda. Darvish has also actively engaged in humanitarian efforts, establishing the Yu Darvish Water Fund in 2007 to provide safe water in developing countries.
