About

Zachary Knight Galifianakis was born on October 1, 1969, in Wilkesboro, North Carolina. His mother, Mary Frances, owned a community arts center, and his father, Harry Galifianakis, was a heating oil vendor. After attending Wilkes Community College and North Carolina State University, where he studied communications, Galifianakis moved to New York City. He began his career performing stand-up comedy in venues such as a hamburger restaurant in Times Square, touring coffee shops and universities to develop his unique style. His early television appearances included a two-week stint on “Saturday Night Live” and a role in “Boston Common.” In 2002, he hosted his own VH1 talk show, “Late World with Zach,” which featured many of his friends from the Los Angeles comedy scene. He also gained recognition for his work as Alan Finger on the Comedy Central series “Dog Bites Man” and as Davis in the Fox drama “Tru Calling.”

Galifianakis achieved widespread fame with his co-starring role as Alan Garner in the 2009 comedy film “The Hangover.” This breakthrough performance led to increased visibility in Hollywood, and he subsequently appeared in various films, including “G-Force” (2009), “Up in the Air” (2009), “Youth in Revolt” (2009), and “Dinner for Schmucks” (2010). He continued to build his filmography with roles in “Due Date” (2010) alongside Robert Downey Jr. and “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” (2010). He reprised his role as Alan Garner in “The Hangover Part II” (2011) and “The Hangover Part III” (2013), further cementing his status as a comedic actor. His animated film work includes voicing Humpty Dumpty in “Puss in Boots” (2011) and The Joker in “The Lego Batman Movie” (2017).

Beyond acting, Galifianakis also developed and hosted the web series “Between Two Ferns with Zach Galifianakis” for Funny or Die, where he interviewed celebrities with a deadpan and confrontational style, earning him Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Short-Format Live-Action Entertainment Program. His career progression also includes significant roles in critically acclaimed films such as “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)” (2014), which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and starring in the FX series “Baskets” (2016–2019), for which he also served as co-creator, writer, and executive producer. In 2023, he starred in “The Beanie Bubble” and is set to appear in the live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch” in 2025.
