Anne Jacqueline Hathaway was born on November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York. Her mother, Kate McCauley Hathaway, was an actress, and her father, Gerald T. Hathaway, was a lawyer. She developed an early interest in acting after seeing her mother perform. Hathaway attended several schools including Brooklyn Heights Montessori School and Millburn High School, where she participated in school plays. She also studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and was the first teenager admitted into The Barrow Group Theater Company’s acting program. She pursued higher education at Vassar College and later transferred to New York University’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
Hathaway’s career began with television, including the short-lived series “Get Real” (1999). Her breakthrough came with her role as Mia Thermopolis in “The Princess Diaries” (2001) and its 2004 sequel. She then sought more mature roles, appearing in “Havoc” (2005) and gaining critical recognition for her performance in “Brokeback Mountain” (2005). Her role in “The Devil Wears Prada” (2006) marked a significant commercial success. Further critical acclaim came with her role in “Rachel Getting Married” (2008), for which she received an Academy Award nomination. In 2012, she starred as Catwoman in “The Dark Knight Rises” and as Fantine in “Les Misérables,” earning her an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Beyond acting, Hathaway has actively engaged in advocacy. She served as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, supporting gender equality and advocating for paid parental leave. She is also involved with various charitable organizations, including the Lollipop Theatre Network and the Human Rights Campaign. Her career continues to evolve with recent roles in “WeCrashed” (2022), “Armageddon Time” (2022), “Eileen” (2023), and “The Idea of You” (2024), demonstrating her continued presence in prominent film and television productions.
