The Chicago house don dropped in to Bloop London Radio to record a live mix for their Digging Deep series.

DJ Spen has appeared on Bloop London Radio’s Digging Deep series, a “live radio show hosted each time by a different artist, which gives the host an opportunity to play the different shades of electronic music, as opposed to the usual DJ set.” Previous participants in the series include Fred Everything, Kevin Knapp, Dance Spirit, Aquarius Heaven and Alex Banks. Bloop are an online underground radio station based in the heart of central London. They specialise in electronic music and “otherworldly sounds from around the globe”, offering up exclusive radio shows and live guest mixes from a range of DJs, both established and up-and-coming.

DJ Spen began his long and successful career in the ’80s working as a radio DJ, while making hip-hop beats with the trio The Numarx: a group that would go on to record the classic “Girl You Know It’s True”, later covered and made famous by Milli Vanilli. The decade that followed saw Spencer move away from hip-hop and towards the classic Chicago house sound that would become his signature, after joining forces with venerated production collective The Basement Boys. Producing under the alias Jasper Street Co., Spencer released his first 12″ through Basement Boys Records in 1995, the high-energy gospel house track “A Feeling”. This was the first in a hugely successful series of releases for the label that brought Spen both critical and commercial success over the next decade, leading to worldwide recognition as a pioneer of house music.
