McLean has been involved in the entertainment industry from a young age, appearing in projects for heavyweight television networks Disney and Nickelodeon in shows such as GUTS, Welcome Freshmen and Hi Honey, I’m Home! McLean met fellow Backstreet Boys members Brian Littrell and Nick Carter early on, with all three leaving high school early and continuing their education with a tutor while touring.
The trio formed the Backstreet Boys with other members Howie Dorough and Kevin Richardson in 1993 and shot to stardom, dominating the charts for most of the late 90s through to the early 2000s. The group has seen phenomenal success, selling over 175 million records worldwide and charting 9 albums in the top 10 on the Billboard Top 200. The star status of the group was cemented with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2013 and they remain not only the best-selling boy band in history, but also one of the best-selling music artists worldwide. They commemorated their 20 year anniversary with the release of their eighth studio album, In a World Like This, earning them yet another album in the US Top 10.
When not performing with the Backsteet Boys, McLean also enjoys a successful solo career. He created the alter ego, “Johnny NoName” in 2000, who has performed a number of shows around New York City and is involved in several charitable causes, such as the JNN Foundation (which focuses on a number of projects from raising money for diabetes research to pioneering music programs in schools) and VH1 Save the Music. McLean is also a participant in the suicide prevention activist initiative ‘It Gets Better Project’.
McLean embarked on his first solo tour in 2008, performing new solo material in North America and across Europe. His debut solo album, Have It All, was released in 2010 and boasted collaborations with writers such as One Republic’s Ryan Tedder and N’Sync’s Joshua Scott, otherwise known as JC Chasez. More solo material followed in 2013 when McLean collaborated with rapper Redrama on the single ‘Clouds’. His second solo album, The Anthem, is due for release soon and McLean has described the material as ‘R&B, funk, rock, soul’, also adding that, ‘It’s everything I am…there’s a nice cohesion.’ The lead single, ‘Live Together ’ was released in September and was noted for his focus on social justice.
McLean has experienced many celebrity bookings, which has seen him make a number of television and film appearances with the Backstreet Boys, performing on popular teen shows such as Sabrina the Teenage Witch, long-running and massively popular comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live, and the 2013 James Franco and Seth Rogen film This Is the End.
Currently, McLean is back in the studio with the Backstreet Boys, working with a new producer, Jay Cash. The band hopes to have completed the album before they embark on their cruise in May 2016.
