Joe Calzaghe: The Pride of Wales | News | MN2S Talent

Joe Calzaghe, CBE, is a boxing legend and former WBO, IBF, WBC and WBA champion, as well as Super Middleweight and Light Heavyweight world champion. Now retired, the Welshman, also known as the ‘Pride of Wales’ and the ‘Italian Dragon’ (a nod to both his Welsh and Sardinian heritage), is consistently referred to as one of the greatest fighters of his generation.

Born in London and raised in South Wales, this future celebrity began his amateur career at the age of nine. After competing in a number of contests and winning four schoolboy and three senior ABA titles, and reportedly ended up with an astonishing amateur record of 110 wins and 10 losses. His final losses were in 1990 against Michael Smyth in the Welsh ABA Final and Adrian Opreda at the European Junior Championships. After this, however, he soon started his professional boxing career and would never lose another fight again, remaining undefeated and leaving behind an impressive track record.

Calzaghe made his professional debut in 1993 at Cardiff Arms Park. By 1995, he had won all of his first thirteen fights as well as the British Super Middleweight title. He was also voted Young Boxer of the Year by the Professional Boxing Association and the Boxing Writers’ Club. In this early period of Calzaghe’s career, his critics claimed that his skill had not yet been properly tested, but after winning victory upon victory against experienced opponents such as Pat Lawlor, his early success was being proven as more than a mere flash in the pan.

In 1997, Calzaghe went up against fellow Brit and boxing champion Chris Eubank and emerged victorious. Both men only had compliments for one another – Eubank called Calzaghe a ‘true warrior’ and the latter described Eubank as the hardest fight of his professional life. In the early noughties, Calzaghe continued his incredible rise within the boxing rankings, performing swiftly and lethally in his international fights. He took on strong and experienced fighters such as David Starie, Richie Woodhall, Mario Veit and Kabary Salem and continued to defend his Super Middleweight title, astounding and exhilarating audiences.

When Calzaghe went up against American IBF Super Middleweight champion Jeff Lacy in 2005, his opponent was down as the pre-fight favourite with the bookies. To everyone’s surprise, Calzaghe would prove a formidable force, dominating the match and taking home the IBF title for himself. After defeating Peter Manfredo Jr. before a crowd of 35,000 people on his home turf in Wales, he would again fight in his native country in 2007 against the unbeaten Danish boxer Mikkel Kessler, winning by a unanimous decision. At this point in his career, Calzaghe was given the title of ‘undisputed champion’ by all boxing organisations and won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year all within the same twelve months.

Calzaghe has shown the ability to turn around tough matches, a good example being in his match against Bernard Hopkins. He received heavy hits, but eventually regained his composure to block Hopkins strong right-hand punches and land more blows against his opponent than in any other match. Another example of this was shown against Roy Jones Jr. in which Calzaghe would suffer a similar initial difficulty, however he came back in the later rounds to become victorious.

In 2009, Calzaghe announced his retirement from the sport and became the tenth World Champion boxer to hang up his gloves undefeated. Calzaghe has since gone on to set up his own boxing promotion company with his father Enzo called ‘Calzaghe Promotions’. He has also devoted his time to charitable causes such as Soccer Aid and the Beat Bullying campaign, motivated by his own experiences of childhood bullying. In 2014, Calzaghe was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a legendary and well-loved figure not just in the ring and the boxing world, but in the sporting world as a whole.
