In celebration of his Autobiography out this year, we looked further into what we should expect in the words of John Virgo.
John Virgo is one of the biggest snooker stars on the books here at top talent agency MN2S. Most famous during his heyday of the 1970s and 1980s, he was not only at the top of his field as a sportsman, but also went on to present the Big Break TV show along with Jim Davidson.
What to expect from “Say Goodnight, JV”.
As a professional player, Virgo made more than a quarter of a million pounds in prize money. He’s still a familiar face to anyone who watches BBC snooker coverage, and is a sought-after speaker on the after dinner speaking circuit.
Sadly, Virgo has struggled with a gambling addiction, and it’s this topic that his autobiography focuses on. John missed out on the chance to become World Champion because of his struggles, and was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2016 after betting £20,000 on just one horse race.
The new autobiography features a foreword by snooker legend Jimmy White, and the back cover blurb says: “Famous for his hilarious impersonations of snooker’s biggest stars, JV is a household name thanks to his razor-sharp BBC Snooker commentary and the much-loved quiz show Big Break.
“A fascinating insight into British sporting life, taking readers from John’s childhood in Salford, through smoky snooker dens, to tournaments and championships all over the world, as he relives travelling on Concorde, rubbing shoulders with royalty and much more.
“Admiringly nicknamed ‘Mr Perfection’, John tells how he overcame adversity to become UK champion, yet also reveals how gambling wrecked his dreams of becoming World Champion, and almost bankrupted him. An affectionate reminder of a time when Britain – and sport – took themselves a little less seriously.”
Now a reformed character in a happy third marriage, JV as he is known to fans and friends is a fascinating public speaker for any event. His colourful history only makes him more interesting, and his autobiography provides some new talking points for the Englishman.
He’s moved on to pastures new, recently opening a vegan cafe – Virgo’s Vegan Cafe – in his hometown of Salford. This eclectic character is sure to charm your guests if you book him for an event – and his autobiography could just be the last-minute Christmas present you’re looking for this festive season!
