Navratilova was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia to an athletic family. Both her parents worked as ski instructors, and her mother, Jana, was also an accomplished gymnast and tennis player. Her stepfather, Miroslav, would go on to become her first tennis coach, after Navratilova started out playing tennis at the age of 7, her former years spent hitting a ball against a cement wall. At the age of 15, Navratilova won the Czechoslovakia national tennis championship and the following year she debuted on the United States Lawn Tennis Association professional tour. Turning professional at the age of 18, Navratilova was immediately a standout on the court, with a memorable performance at the French Open.

Navratilova’s career has been marked by continuous success. She was the world number 1 in singles for a total of 332 weeks and held the doubles number 1 spot for a record breaking 237 weeks. Navratilova has reached the finals of the Wimbledon singles event an incredible 12 times, nine of which were consecutive – the best performance by any professional player at any major event. She is also only one of three women (alongside Margaret Court and Doris Hart) to have achieved the Career Grand Slam for the three events of singles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles.
