Nathaniel “Nate” Rathbun, known as Audien, was born on January 11, 1992. His musical journey began in Mystic, Connecticut, influenced by his mother’s jazz appreciation. In 2008, at 16, he became captivated by electronic dance music, particularly trance, after encountering it in video game soundtracks. This fascination led him to teach himself production, recreating sounds from Armin Van Buuren’s “A State of Trance” podcasts. At 17, Audien secured his first record deal with Dutch producer Ferry Corsten’s Flashover Recordings, releasing his debut single, “Rise & Shine.”
Audien’s career saw a significant shift in 2012 as he incorporated progressive house elements into his music, notably with “These Are The Days.” His track “Eventide” gained notable exposure when played by Above & Beyond at the 2012 Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas, while “Sup” was featured on Hardwell’s “Hardwell on Air” podcast. In 2013, Above & Beyond further championed his work by premiering “Wayfarer” as the inaugural track on “Above & Beyond Group Therapy.” The year 2015 marked a turning point with his signing to Astralwerks and the release of his debut EP, “Daydreams.” That same year, he earned a Grammy Nomination for Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical, for his remix of Bastille’s “Pompeii.” His single “Insomnia” topped the US Dance Charts, and “Something Better” featuring Lady Antebellum achieved a number one spot on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart and broke into the Billboard Top 40 in Pop Songs. He expanded his festival presence, performing at EDC Vegas, EDC Brazil, TomorrowWorld, and Electric Zoo.
Over the subsequent years, Audien continued to solidify his presence in the electronic music scene. He performed at Lollapalooza in 2016 and released successful tracks like “Crazy Love” with Deb’s Daughter, “One More Weekend” with MAX, and “Hot Water” with 3LAU. He collaborated on numerous official remixes for artists such as Coldplay, Halsey, Nile Rodgers, Jess Glynne, and Calvin Harris. In 2017, he released the “Some Ideas” EP on Astralwerks, showcasing diverse genres, including a collaboration with hardstyle producer Gammer. He returned to Anjunabeats in 2018 with “Higher” and later collaborated with Arty on “Never Letting Go.” His LP “Escapism” was released in 2019, featuring hit songs “Reach” and “Buzzing.” In 2022, Audien launched the “Progressive House Never Died” brand, which debuted at Miami Music Week and led to a sold-out North American tour including a Hollywood Palladium show and a notable EDC set. He also secured Vegas residencies at prominent venues like Marquee, XS Nightclub, Encore Beach Club, Zouk Nightclub, and AYU Dayclub.
