Harry Bauer Rodrigues, known professionally as Baauer, was born on April 30, 1989, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He grew up in Germany, London, and Connecticut before attending college in New York. Baauer began producing dance music at the age of 13, initially releasing a track as “Captain Harry” which gained support on BBC Radio 1. His early work as Baauer, around 2012, contributed to the emerging subgenre of electronic music known as trap, alongside artists such as TNGHT and RL Grime.
Baauer achieved widespread recognition with his single “Harlem Shake,” released on Mad Decent subsidiary Jeffrees in May 2012. The track initially garnered attention from tastemakers and received Pitchfork’s “Best New Track” distinction. In 2013, the song became a global viral video phenomenon through a meme, leading to its debut at number one on the Billboard charts. This success led to a change in Billboard’s chart rules, making “Harlem Shake” the first US number one produced exclusively by streaming. The track is certified double platinum in the United States and won Dance Song of the Year and EDM Song of the Year at the 2013 Billboard Music Awards.
Following the success of “Harlem Shake,” Baauer released his debut EP, “Dum Dum,” in August 2012 on the LuckyMe record label, followed by the “ß” EP in 2014. His debut album, “Aa,” was released in March 2016 and featured collaborations with artists including Future, Pusha T, M.I.A., and G-Dragon. “Aa” was announced by Stephen Colbert on The Late Show. In 2020, Baauer released his second album, “Planet’s Mad,” which received a nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Throughout his career, Baauer has produced for artists like Just Blaze and Pusha T, and remixed tracks for The Prodigy, Missy Elliott, and Gorillaz. His music has also been featured in films such as “Hunger Games: Mockingjay,” “Red Sparrow,” and “Logan,” as well as video games like “FIFA 20” and “Grand Theft Auto Online.”
