Ayla Nereo

Ayla Nereo, born in Sonoma County, California, was homeschooled and exposed early to diverse musical influences including ABBA, Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, and Celtic music. Initially hesitant to sing publicly, Nereo began writing and performing music around 2005. Her songwriting process is described as “channelling” songs, reflecting an intuitive approach to her craft. She pursued studies in psychology and held interests in dance and filmmaking, which later informed her artistic expression. Her journey to overcome stage fright was supported by her peers, leading her to gradually share her music with a wider audience.

Throughout her career, Ayla Nereo has been a prolific artist, releasing numerous solo albums including “Play Me A Time” (2006), “Floating Felt” (2009), “BeHeld” (2012), “Hollow Bone” (2014), “The Code of the Flowers” (2016), “By the Light of the Dark Moon” (2019), and “Sovereign Kin” (2023). Beyond her solo work, Nereo has engaged in significant collaborations, forming the duo Wildlight with DJ The Polish Ambassador, which released albums such as “Hers Was As Thunder” (2013) and “The Tide” (2015). She also contributes to the a cappella group Starling Arrow, with whom she released the album “Cradle” in 2023. Her music is often described as expansive and soulful, incorporating conscious lyrics that address environmental and progressive values.

Nereo frequently performs at major music festivals and has toured with notable acts including Rising Appalachia, Trevor Hall, and Nahko and Medicine for the People. Her performances often feature vocal looping, produced beats, live drumming, and orchestral arrangements, blending genres from folk to electronic music. She resides in Nevada City, California. Her artistic journey highlights a progression from personal apprehension to becoming a recognized voice, celebrated for her profound lyrical content and unique musical stylings.
