Ella McMahon, known professionally as Ella Eyre, was born on April 1, 1994, in London, England. She was raised in Ealing, West London, and trained as a competitive swimmer before pursuing music. Eyre attended Millfield School on a swimming scholarship and later studied musical theatre at the BRIT School for Performing Arts and Technology. Discovered by her management through a vocal coach in 2011, she signed with Warner Chappell Music in July 2012, followed by a record deal with Virgin EMI.
Eyre’s breakthrough came in 2013 with her feature on Rudimental’s UK number-one single “Waiting All Night.” Her debut EP, “Deeper,” was released in December 2013. She gained further recognition as the runner-up for the 2014 BRIT Critics’ Choice Award and second on the BBC Sound of 2014 shortlist. Her solo singles “If I Go,” “Comeback” (both 2014), and “Together” (2015) all reached the top twenty on the UK Singles Chart. She co-wrote the UK number-one single “Changing” for Sigma featuring Paloma Faith in 2014 and won Best Newcomer at the MOBO Awards that same year. In 2015, Eyre featured on DJ Fresh’s single “Gravity,” supported Olly Murs on his arena tour, and became the face of an Emporio Armani Diamonds fragrance campaign. Her debut album, “Feline,” was released in August 2015, followed by a win for Best Female at the MOBO Awards 2015.
After a period of touring and appearances, Eyre announced her comeback concert in 2017, performing new material. She collaborated with Sigala on “Came Here for Love” (2017) and “Just Got Paid” (2018), with Meghan Trainor and French Montana. She also released “Ego” featuring Ty Dolla $ign (2017) and “Answerphone” with Banx & Ranx featuring Yxng Bane (2018), which peaked at number 5 on the UK Chart. In July 2019, Eyre signed with Island Records and released “Mama” featuring Banx & Ranx and Kiana Ledé. Her subsequent singles include “New Me” (2020), “L.O.V.(e)” (2020), “Dreams” featuring Yxng Bane (2020), and “Careless” (2020), leading to her EP “Quarter Life Crisis” (2020). Her first independent release, “Head in the Ground,” came in November 2023.
