Ella Mai Howell was born on November 3, 1994, in London, England, to a Jamaican mother and an English-Irish father. Her mother, a jazz music enthusiast, named her after Ella Fitzgerald. At the age of 12, Mai moved to New York City for her mother’s teaching job, returning to England at 17 after graduating from Queens High School of Teaching. Her musical career began in 2014 at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute London, where she briefly auditioned for The X Factor as part of a trio before pursuing a solo path.
In 2015, Ella Mai independently released a four-track solo EP, “Troubled,” on SoundCloud. Her presence on social media and this EP attracted the attention of American record producer DJ Mustard, who subsequently signed her to his 10 Summers Records label, an imprint of Interscope Records. From 2016 to 2018, she released three more EPs-“Time,” “Change,” and “Ready”-under the label. The single “Boo’d Up” from the “Ready” EP gained significant traction on social media and in nightclubs, eventually becoming her breakthrough hit in 2018. The song peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100, setting a record for most weeks at number one for a woman on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. Her self-titled debut album followed in October 2018, featuring collaborations with artists like Chris Brown and John Legend, and earning her a Grammy for Best R&B Song.
Ella Mai continued to build her career with her second studio album, “Heart on My Sleeve,” released in 2022, which debuted at number 15 on the Billboard 200. Throughout her career, she has received numerous accolades, including three Billboard Music Awards in 2019 for Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Female Artist, and Top R&B Song for “Boo’d Up.” She has also toured extensively, both as a headliner and an opening act for artists such as Kehlani, Bruno Mars, Ariana Grande, and Mary J. Blige. Her artistry is influenced by R&B icons like Lauryn Hill, Chris Brown, and Beyoncé, a reflection of the 90s R&B sound she embodies.
